(Overview)

The Bowtie Wetland Demonstration Project is a stormwater treatment site featuring a wetland habitat that will house native riparian flora and fauna. This project focused on engaging and informing residents about the feasibility and scalability of this treatment site.

In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), our team was commissioned to develop content and materials that highlight and market the vital functions of the treatment site, emphasizing its ecological significance and raising awareness of its role in environmental conservation.

(Background)

(Background)

We started this project by conducting research, giving us a fuller sense of what defined this particular site’s ecology. We felt a sense of awe and increasing fascination with the Wetlands and knew that we had to bring this wealth of knowledge to the public.

There is a widely accepted aesthetic that characterizes traditional educational and science materials, but we wanted to capture the public’s attention with the distinctly CalArts visual language of novel visuals like fun animations and unique graphics.

We focused on making an animation centerpiece for our project, with a suite of assets including sprites, backgrounds, patterns, illustrations, etc. While making all of this content, we started conceptualizing the platform where our content would live. We decided that a website would be the best medium for the job. As the sole graphic designer of the team, creating this website became my responsibility.

I jump-started the process with a sitemap to structure the content hierarchy and inform the flow of the website. I then developed low-fidelity wireframes to visually scaffold the website in detail and used a content management system (CMS) called Cargo to bring it to life.

The website was the hero and it informed all print materials I designed for the event (brochures, posters, stickers, and banners).
